Malamute & Akita Insulators | Detailed Features

One of our most versatile products that kids will use all year long; for added warmth on a trip to the snow, around the campfire, or on a brisk day at school. Designed as an active insulation piece, the Malamute (Boys) and Akita (Girls) Insulators are made with strategically body-mapped 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation providing significant warmth in a thin, lightweight package. As an added feature, the Malamute and Akita insulators can be worn either on their own or zipped in to the Duke and Xena Hardshells (sold separately) in a "3-in-1" configuration.

Here is a quick snapshot of all the features and, below, we explain why we included them.

Warmth without bulk

Problem: Most insulation pieces are bulky and make kids feel like the "marshmallow man"

SHRED DOG Solution:  After examining and testing the available insulation materials, we chose to use 3M Thinsulate. This material provides a great deal of warmth to the layering system in a thin, lightweight package without the bulk that is typically associated with insulation pieces. 3M Thinsulate traps and holds body heat, while maintaining breathability, preventing condensation buildup on the interior of the garment. The extremely fine microfibers in 3M Thinsulate insulation help trap air and block body radiant heat loss, making this an extremely efficient insulator. The high warmth-to-thickness ratio of this insulation enables a product design with less bulk and enhanced freedom of movement.

"3-in-1" compatible

Problem: Most insulation pieces that are part of a "3-in-1" jacket are cut with a shorter than normal torso, and are not styled to worn as a stand-alone piece (i.e. they are really just an insulation liner of another jacket).

SHRED DOG Solution: We designed our insulator jackets and hardshell jackets as separate products that can function alone or integrated together in a "3-in-1" configuration. The insulator jackets are styled and cut with a longer torso (including a dropback hem) so kids can wear them to school as a standalone jacket in fall, winter, spring, or even on chilly summer evenings. Allowing kids to remove their insulation layer from the hardshell when it is not needed prevents kids from overheating and sweating profusely. This is extremely important because once the inner layers of your kid’s system become saturated with sweat, they will be cold once they stop moving. For example, waiting in a lift line and riding the chairlift back to the top.

ADJUST-A-FIT

Problem: Kids grow really fast, high-performance outdoor gear is expensive, and other brands only solve half of the problem.

SHRED DOG Solution: We created a system called Adjust-A-Fit that allows our sleeves and pant legs to be extended AND reduced in length. Other brands have you rip a seam to extend the length but then how do you hand it down? Our industry-first Adjust-A-Fit system allows the sleeves or pant legs to “grow“ with their original owner and then shrink back down once the product is ready to be handed down to the next generation. This extends the life and usefulness of the product. The system can also be used to create a customized fit for kids that have longer or shorter limbs than traditional sizes typically accommodate.

Body-mapped Insulation

Problem: Active kids overheat in bulky insulation pieces.

SHRED DOG Solution: We designed our insulator jackets to have 100g of 3M Thinsulate  in the chest to keep the core warm. The arms require less insulation so, to prevent overheating during periods of activity, we put 60g of 3M Thinsulate throughout the arms.

Size Guides

SHRED DOG size guides are based on body size not garment measurements. Please note that all SHRED DOG products are designed to layer, therefore each product is cut and sized to accommodate the appropriate layers underneath it.

Measuring Tips

To get the best fitting products please take a few minutes to measure your kid following these simple steps. For all measuring use a flexible tape.

  1. Chest - Measure horizontally across the fullest area of the chest
  2. Waist - Measure horizontally around the narrowest part of the waist, (which is about 2 inches above the belly button)
  3. Hip - With feet together measure around the fullest point of the hip,  keeping the tape measure horizontal
  4. Inseam - Without shoes on, measure from front crotch straight down to the floor and reduce 1/2"
  5. Height - Measure from floor straight up to the top of the head
  6. Sleeve Length - Measure from center back across shoulder point and down the arm to the wrist
